Topography is a multi-format documentary project that explores the histories, and futures, of land use. Set in and around North America's increasingly imperiled public lands, the project spends time in the Badlands of South Dakota, California’s Death Valley, and Fire Island National Seashore in New York. From medicinal plant experts to paleontologists, rangers to ranchers, motel workers to tourists, environmental preservation to settler colonialism, seaside communities to seemingly desolate badlands—Topography fragments across time, species, scales, and histories to reveal how different perspectives shape the land and its futures.
Topography brings together a rare combination of documentary footage, archival, and the creative misuse of emerging technologies including photogrammetry, game engines, and interactivity. The project spans documentary films, live-edited performances, immersive installations, artful video games, community publications, and interdisciplinary symposia. Formats symbiotically co-evolve in this uniquely iterative project, contributing material and learnings to each other. This allows the work to develop in community while reaching broad and varied audiences throughout the process.


Led by Hannah Jayanti and Alexander Porter, Topography is a collaborative project that brings together a range of talented and interdisciplinary artists and ecologists working on the various formats in different capacities. More information at www.topography.place.&#38;nbsp;

In the otherworldly Badlands of South Dakota, a seemingly ‘bad’ land is revealed to be teeming with life, buried histories, and restorative futures.

Badlands &#124; Documentary Feature

Set in the dramatic Badlands of western South Dakota—a region sculpted by erosion, militarization, dispossession, and preservation—the film unearths histories that have shaped the North American landscape. Through intimate documentary footage, deeply researched archival material, and speculative virtual worlds, Badlands immerses viewers in the stewardship of contested lands, while imagining restorative futures. 

Guided by Lakota ethnobotanist Richard T. Sherman's 'Indigenous Stewardship Model' the film weaves together a multiplicity of perspectives in order to explore how different ways of knowing can work together toward environmental justice. Centering the land, the film visits with a wide array of humans and non-humans including ecologists, tribal members, paleontologists, ranchers, military historians, tourists, foragers, rangers, rocks, flora, and fauna. These intertwine to create a deeply layered portrait of place across vast scales that poetically yet urgently reckons with how to foster interdependent and accountable relationships between inhabitants of all landscapes.


Badlands is part of the multi-format documentary project,&#38;nbsp;Topography. Traverse a vast terrain without leaving a tiny patch of land.
Strata &#124; Documentary Performance
40-60 mins,&#38;nbsp;premiered at Transmediale 2023
Strata is a live-edited, improvisational documentary performance. Each iteration is a unique call and response between a virtual landscape with documentary footage.  

Set in a small 3D scanned region of the Badlands of South Dakota, performers construct a documentary live on stage. The performance, which is different every time, brings together a rare combination of photogrammetry, game engines, augmented reality, and documentary audio. These intertwine to create a unique immersive landscape filled with a tapestry of stories, observations, memories, and buried histories. As the performers move through the landscape listening to figures describing the place, viewers are carried from paleontology to foraging, wildlife management to nuclear arms and geopolitics, and indigenous herbalism to cattle ranching. The experience layers histories, economics, natural sciences, deep time, and personal anecdotes in order to invite audiences into a meditation on the complex histories embedded in all lands and how profoundly human perspectives shape and define their futures.

Strata has been performed at Transmediale (Berlin, Germany, 2023), Camden International Film Festival (Maine, USA, 2023), Science &#38;amp; Justice Research Center (Santa Cruz, CA, 2023), Harvard Mahindra Humanities Center (Cambridge, MA, 2024), Plasmata (Ioannina, Greece, 2023), Headlands Center for the Arts (California, USA, 2022), First Look at the Museum of the Moving Image (Queens, NY, 2021).

As one day unfolds, Death Valley foregrounds workers choosing to live unconventional lives in the heart of the vast preserved landscape of Death Valley National Park. As dawn breaks, their hands smooth, count, fold and wash. They clock in, check their watches, and ask what time it is. Interspersed the sun moves throughout the sky.Over the course of the film, they begin to share their internal landscapes. The seemingly inhospitable desert gets reconstituted as a space of belonging and longing, avoidance and choice, isolation and connection. Through an intimate combination of poetic and observational filming, the film explores the tension and coexistence of different temporalities: labor time, geological time, and a human time that aspires to exist outside of modern social constraints.&#38;nbsp;

Death Valley is part of the multi-format documentary project, Topography. Supported by the Ken Corday FDM Grow Grant, National Park Arts Foundation.&#38;nbsp;

Fire Island (working title) &#124; 3-Channel Video23:06 mins&#38;nbsp;
Fire Island is a 3-channel video installation set between Fire Island National Seashore off the coast of Long Island in New York, and the filmmaker’s old home in Brooklyn. The video interweaves documentary footage, archival material, place-based sound design, and photogrammetry scans to explore the way memory lives within places. Amidst the shifting sands of Fire Island, a park ranger leads tours to find her childhood home which was destroyed by the National Park when they reclaimed the land; a scientist tracks deer making their home in the only federally designated wilderness in NY; a maintenance worker reads the 1964 Wilderness act on a lunch break; a man carves a campground out of the encroaching vines; and a couple virtually recreates their home amidst dreams of loss and change. 
The film is dedicated to those who have lost their homes, both human and non-human, as a result of recent hurricanes, climate change, or the wandering dunes of time.


Fire Island is part of the multi-format documentary project, Topography. Supported by Headlands Center for the Arts Residency and Project Space, McEvoy Family Award for Film/Video, Fire Island National Seashore Arts Residency.

Can we traverse the oceans between us?

Two filmmakers explore Tangier Island, a resilient Chesapeake Bay community of 400 people facing rapid land loss due to sea level rise and erosion. Although many of the conservative islanders don’t believe in man-made climate change, the filmmakers try to foster honest conversations that bridge divides with those holding opposing views.

As they build relationships with the community, they’re inspired by the islanders’ determination to preserve their way of life. The filmmakers dive deep into the struggles of the island, including commercial crabber and Tangier Mayor James "Ooker" Eskridge's views on environmentalism and faith. Along the way, they confront their own biases about openness, sparking unexpected self-reflection.

Their journey becomes a quest to understand and connect, revealing the power of dialogue in the face of environmental and ideological challenges. Strangers &#38;amp; Stayers invites us to reimagine how we can connect despite our division and fear—because ultimately, our fates are tied together.

Set in the small desert town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, the film takes place in the shadow of the world's first commercial Spaceport. Subtly set in a near future when space travel has begun, the film follows five residents in the town - Yvonne, Olin, Katie, Philip and George. Anchored in observational documentary footage filmed over three years, the film weaves together archival, virtual reality worlds, an improvised score by Bill Frisell and a speculative premise based on the very real spaceport located just outside of town. These intertwine to create a lyrical meditation on progress, history, and how we navigate a sense of loss within ourselves and a changing world. More at www.torcfilm.com.

Blackout is a generative virtual reality documentary set on the New York City subway. The accompanying installation featured two VR headsets within a physical structure matching a subway car's shape, with real poles and benches. The viewer puts on a headset and boards a NYC subway train. They can walk around, lean against poles, sit next to virtual passengers. When the train leaves the station, they discover they can hear the thoughts of the passengers. The narrative is determined by they you approach and look at, and the longer they listen, the deeper you delve into their stories. Every experience is unique as an algorithm selects different passengers with similarly tagged stories.
The participatory and non-linear story combines 3D scanned people and documentary interviews with over 40 New Yorkers from all walks of life. Their portraits were captured using cameras and depth sensors using a custom-built volumetric filmmaking approach that has since been adopted by companies including Intel and Microsoft. Blackout is considered to be the first full volumetric documentary.

 
Blackout premiered in competition at Tribeca Storyscapes in 2017, and was supported by Cinereach, Tribeca New Media Fund, and the Knight Foundation.
